You've probably heard the horror stories told by either friends, relatives, even pet stores about the immense amount of money, time, and equipment you will need to start a marine tank. In this day and age, this simply isn't true. Here's a few quick tips on setting up a marine tank both easily and relatively inexpensively.
TANK
The rule of thumb here is: the bigger the tank, the more forgiving it is. The average size tank for a beginner is in the 30 - 55 gallon range.
FILTRATION
One of the most important pieces of equipment that you will purchase is the protein skimmer. Don't skimp! A skimmer that doesn't do as intended is totally worthless. Another "way" to add filtration is naturally via Live Rock. We can help you decide which method is best depending on the "type" of tank you're looking to construct.
HEATER
Almost any submersible heater will work. Use about 3 watts of heating power per gallon.
LIVE ROCK
Not a necessity but preferred for biological filtration. The live rock will also be a source of food and shelter for many marine fish and invertebrates. Be sure to use quality live rock! Rock is available either fresh or cured. Fresh is less expensive but you must wait a while (up to 2 months) before adding livestock to the tank. If cured rock is used, livestock can be added almost immediately. Suncoast Aquariums cures all of its live rock before selling. It's just safer for you and your set-up.
TEST KIT
Again, don't skimp here. A low quality test kit is both inaccurate and hard to read. Basic test kits to get are for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, and alkalinity. For a reef tank, also get test kits for calcium and phosphate. A refractometer is preferred over a hydrometer for measuring salt content. It is much more accurate. And when you stop by, bring in a sample of you water (don't let it sit too long) and we'll check it for you!
MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT
Other things that you will need to get started are dry salt mix, digital thermometer and a hydrometer (see refractometer above) to measure the salt content of the water. And of course, we have everything you'll need to get started.
That's it! Starting and maintaining a tank is easier than ever. And we'll be right here ready to offer courteous and knowledgeable advice to ensure your tank is healthy and on the road to success.
